Why Tag Manager matters when numbers look wrong
Tag Manager decides what reaches Google Analytics, Google Ads and every other platform. When conversions drop or an event disappears, the cause is often a paused tag, a trigger that no longer matches, or a version published without anyone checking. Claude can read the whole container at once, compare any two versions and tell you what changed and when.
Connect Google Analytics or Google Ads too, and Claude can line up a version’s date with the day the numbers moved, or check which events set up in Tag Manager actually arrive in GA4.
What you can ask
- Audit“Audit our container and list the problems, worst first.”
- History“What changed in the last version we published?”
- Explain“When exactly does the purchase tag fire?”
- Cross-check“Which GA4 events are set up in Tag Manager but haven’t arrived in GA4 this week?”
- Draft“Add a GA4 generate_lead event when the contact form is submitted.”
“Google Ads conversions dropped to zero on the 7th. Was it Tag Manager?”
“Yes. Version 12 was saved on the 7th and paused the Google Ads Purchase conversion tag. I can draft unpausing it and, once you’ve seen the preview, publishing it.”

How changes work
Changes are switched off until you turn them on in the dashboard. When they’re on, Claude still shows every change as a dry run first. Once you agree, it saves the change as a draft in its own workspace. Publishing is a separate step: Google checks the workspace compiles, Claude shows you exactly what will change on the live site, and it publishes only when you say yes. Every publish is a named version, so undoing it is one request: “publish the previous version again”.

Yes. Claude reads Tag Manager through a connector built on MCP, the open standard Claude uses for outside data, and Caybl.ai is a hosted one. You sign in with Google once from the Caybl.ai dashboard, add Caybl.ai from Claude's connector directory, and Claude can read your containers directly. There's no Google Cloud project, API key or service account.
Yes, if you allow changes and ask it to. Claude drafts edits in a separate workspace called “Caybl changes”. Publishing is a separate step: Google compiles the workspace, Claude shows you exactly what will change on the live site, and it publishes only when you say yes, as a named version. To undo, ask Claude to publish the previous version again.
Pause or unpause a tag, create or edit GA4 event and Google Ads conversion tags, create or edit page view, click, form and custom event triggers, and publish or roll back versions. It can't write Custom HTML or delete anything. Changes are switched off until you turn them on in your dashboard, per container if you like.
The one that has access to your containers in Tag Manager. To draft changes it needs Edit permission on the container; Read is enough for audits and history.
